How to make room for your writing life.
Out on the beach at Lake Kachess, a Douglas fir had fallen over and revealed in its roots something even stronger than its power to push through soil.
As I walked around it, I saw its root system lifted and fanned out.
And there, within the tangle—stones embedded in its roots. Life had molded itself around the immovable.
This metaphored immediately in my mind: Where am I creating the immovable in my life, the “no matter what”?
Where are you creating it in yours?
What are we forcing everything else to grow around?
If you give life soft soil, it will sink its roots in and spread: so many reminders, alerts, videos you could be watching. But if you create rock-hard boundaries, it will have no choice but to work around it.
